Manchester Pest Solutions clears cockroaches from Longsight homes, including flats above the Stockport Road and Dickenson Road shops and older red-brick terraces. We identify the species, put gel bait where children and pets can't reach, and return for the hatchlings. Ring or message us and we'll offer the earliest slot we have, often the same day.
Why do Longsight kitchens get cockroaches?
Ask where the cockroaches in a Longsight home are coming from and the honest answer is that it depends on the building.
Along Stockport Road and Dickenson Road, the district’s main shopping streets, ground floors are given over to takeaways, restaurants, grocers and fresh-produce shops, and some homes sit directly above them. A busy kitchen downstairs keeps the whole building warm, while drains, extraction ducts and service runs tie the two floors together. German cockroaches, the small light brown ones, can follow those routes upstairs through gaps only a few millimetres wide.
In the purpose-built blocks, the movement tends to be sideways rather than upwards. Heating pipes, waste stacks and boxed-in risers run between flats, and cockroaches spread along them unseen, which is why one flat treated on its own sometimes sees them return a few months later.
The red-brick terraces are different again. Cellars, old drain runs and the cool, damp space under a ground-floor kitchen suit the oriental cockroach: bigger, slower and almost black. These usually come up from beneath, through the drain or the floor void, rather than across from the house next door.
Where we look in a Longsight home
In a flat over a shop, we start where the building’s services come through. That means behind the cooker and fridge, inside the boiler cupboard, along any boxed pipework, under the sink and around the points where pipes pass through the floor. Activity bunched along one wall or one riser often tells us the source is below.
In a terrace, we follow the trail downwards: the sink waste where it leaves the back wall, the gully in the yard, the cellar head if there is one, under the bath and beneath the kitchen units, where a missing kickboard can open straight into the floor void.
How a cockroach job runs here
Think of the first visit as a survey as much as a treatment. Monitors go down so we can see where activity is heaviest, gel bait is tucked into hinge gaps, crevices and the spaces behind the fridge and cooker, and for oriental cockroaches in floor voids or cellars we may add a residual treatment in places nobody touches. We then come back at intervals over the following weeks, usually three visits in all, because egg cases shield the next generation from the first round.
Where the monitors keep pointing at the business below or the flat next door, we’ll put that in writing for your landlord or managing agent. A shared building clears far faster when everyone is treated in the same few weeks. In a terrace, the job often finishes with a repair rather than more bait: a cracked waste pipe collar, a broken drain cover or a gap where pipework enters the kitchen. In most private tenancies those repairs fall to the landlord, and we’ll describe exactly what needs fixing.
Keeping them away afterwards
A few habits make a real difference in these homes. Keep the gully grid and drain covers in the yard intact and clear of leaves, and fill gaps around pipes under the sink and behind the washing machine. Fix drips straight away, because a dry kitchen is a hostile one. Give second-hand fridges, cookers and furniture a careful look before they come indoors, wherever they’re from. If you live over a food business, ask your landlord whether the shop has regular pest control, and tell us early if you spot even one cockroach after we’ve signed off, since a quick extra visit beats starting again.

What we tend to find in Longsight
- The 2021 census counted several dozen Longsight households whose home is a flat within a commercial building, the classic flat over a shop, and along Stockport Road and Dickenson Road many of the businesses underneath are takeaways, restaurants and grocers.
- Around one household in eight here lives in a purpose-built flat, where shared heating pipes and waste stacks let German cockroaches spread between neighbouring homes out of sight.
- In the red-brick terraces, cellars, old drain runs and the cool voids under back kitchens suit the larger oriental cockroach, which usually arrives from below rather than from next door.
- With about two in three households renting, cockroaches often come to light at the start of a tenancy, when cupboards are emptied and appliances pulled out, so a torch check on moving day is worth the five minutes.
- Dickenson Road's second-hand market and local clear-outs are a cheap way to kit out a kitchen, but fridges, cookers and microwaves deserve a careful look around the motor and seals before they come inside.
What happens when you call us
- 1
Tell us what you've seen
Ring or message us with what you've spotted and where. A photo of one cockroach, even a squashed one, usually tells us which kind it is and how to plan the visit.
- 2
A proper look round
With a torch we check under the sink, behind kickboards and appliances, in the boiler cupboard and along pipe boxing, and set small insect monitors to see how far it has spread.
- 3
Targeted treatment
Tiny dots of professional gel bait go into cracks, hinges and gaps where cockroaches shelter. Where it's needed, we add a growth regulator, or a spray or dust in voids nobody can reach.
- 4
Plain advice for you
We show you where everything is, what to leave alone and what helps: no shop sprays, food sealed away, drips fixed and the gel spots left where they are.
- 5
Follow-up visits
We come back two to three weeks later to check the monitors, top up bait that has been eaten and catch the young cockroaches hatching from egg cases.
- 6
Proofing and sign-off
We seal the small gaps we find around pipes and units, flag bigger repairs for you or your landlord, and sign off once the monitors stay clear.
Cockroach Removal in Longsight: your questions
We're above a takeaway on Stockport Road. Do you need to get into the shop as well?
Not to treat your flat, but it helps to know what's happening downstairs. We'll treat your home thoroughly and, if the evidence points to the business below, we'll say so in a written note for your landlord or managing agent. Food businesses are expected to keep their own pest control in place, so the shop may already have a contractor visiting. When both floors are treated within the same few weeks, the problem clears far faster than when each waits for the other.
Our housing association flat in Longsight has cockroaches. Who should treat them?
Many councils run a pest control service for residents, but what is covered, who can book and the charges all vary and can change, so check the council's own pest control pages before you book. If you rent from a council or housing association, report the problem to your landlord first. If you would rather book a private firm, call or message us and we'll offer the earliest slot we have.
Big dark cockroaches keep appearing in our terrace kitchen. Where are they getting in?
In Longsight's older terraces, the trail usually leads downwards. Those large, nearly black ones live in drains, cellars and the cool space under ground-floor rooms, so we check where the sink waste leaves the back wall, the gully in the yard, the cellar head and any missing kickboard that opens into the floor void. Once we've found the route, we treat the voids and tell you exactly what needs repairing. If you rent, those repairs are normally your landlord's to arrange.
I'm buying a second-hand fridge. How do I check it for cockroaches?
Pull it away from the wall before it comes indoors and shine a torch over the back, especially around the compressor, the motor housing and the rubber door seals, because cockroaches like the warmth there. You're looking for tiny dark specks, small brown capsule-shaped egg cases or live insects. Check in the yard or the hallway rather than the kitchen, and give it a good clean. If you find anything at all, don't bring it in; send us a photo and we'll tell you what it is.
Can you treat a one-bedroom flat with a newborn in it?
Yes. Gel bait is our main treatment for the small brown German cockroaches found in flats, and it goes in tiny amounts deep inside hinges, cracks and behind appliances, nowhere a baby or crawling toddler will reach. In a small flat we plan around the rooms you use most, avoid sprays wherever we can, and if one is genuinely needed in a void we'll tell you which room to keep closed and for how long. Mention the baby when you book so we can plan the visit.
Does having cockroaches mean my home is dirty?
No, and please don't let embarrassment stop you ringing. Cockroaches need warmth, water and somewhere to hide, and a spotless kitchen in a block of flats can still get them from a neighbour's flat or a shared riser. They also arrive in second-hand appliances, furniture and cardboard boxes. Crumbs and grease make an infestation easier to sustain, so we'll give you some kitchen advice, but we're not there to judge. Plenty of perfectly clean homes get them.
How do I tell German cockroaches from oriental cockroaches?
Size and colour are the quickest clues. German cockroaches are small, around 11 to 16 mm, light brown with two dark stripes just behind the head, and they can run up glass and glazed tiles. Oriental cockroaches are bigger, roughly 20 to 25 mm, shiny dark brown to black, slower, and they cannot climb smooth surfaces, so you often find them stuck in a bath or sink. German ones live around kitchen appliances and pipework; oriental ones prefer drains, cellars and ground-floor voids.
Are the cockroaches in my flat coming from next door?
Quite possibly. Flats share heating pipes, waste stacks, service risers and ceiling voids, and cockroaches travel along them without ever using a door. If you're seeing them mostly around pipework, a neighbour's flat or a communal bin store may be the source. Treating your flat still helps, but if the problem is building-wide it will keep coming back until the neighbouring flats and communal areas are treated too, so it's worth telling your landlord or managing agent early.
