Manchester Pest Solutions clears cockroaches from flats and terraced homes across Rusholme and Moss Side. We track down where they hide, tuck gel bait into cracks children and pets can't reach, then come back over several weeks to catch any that hatch. Call or message us and we'll offer the earliest slot we have, often the same day.
Two kinds of housing, two kinds of cockroach
The cockroaches we meet in Rusholme and Moss Side mostly depend on the building. In the flats and council-built homes of western Moss Side, it’s usually the small, tan-coloured German cockroach, which lives indoors, likes warmth and travels between homes through shared services. In the old red-brick terraces that fill most of Rusholme and much of Moss Side, we also find the larger, glossy oriental cockroach, which prefers cool, damp places below floor level. Knowing which one you have shapes where we look and how the treatment is set up, so a photo when you first get in touch is a big help.
Flats west of Princess Road
That’s why we’ll ask whether neighbours have seen them and look closely at the points where pipes come through walls and floors. A cockroach problem shared across several flats needs the landlord or managing agent involved, so the neighbouring homes and any communal bin areas are checked as well.
Old terraces and the oriental cockroach
Rusholme’s terraces were built between 1880 and 1930, and Moss Side’s surviving rows date from the same period. Houses of that age often have clay drain runs, voids under the ground floor and, in some cases, cellars, which is exactly the cool, damp habitat oriental cockroaches like. They tend to come up through a cracked drain connection, a gap round a waste pipe or a damaged airbrick, and they’re slower than German cockroaches, so you’ll often see one crossing the kitchen floor at night or stranded in the bath.
Treatment here goes into those voids and drain runs as well as the kitchen, and the repairs matter as much as the treatment. In a rented terrace, putting right a broken drain or a hole in the floor is usually the owner’s responsibility.
Living near the Curry Mile
The stretch of Wilmslow Road known as the Curry Mile carries at least 70 restaurants, takeaways and kebab houses. A 2017 look at food hygiene ratings found a quarter of businesses there needing major improvement, and a café just off the strip was closed after mice and cockroaches were found. None of that means your home is at fault. But where houses or flats share walls, drains or bin areas with busy kitchens, cockroaches cross between them regardless of how clean either side keeps things. If you run a food business locally, see our commercial pest control page for how we support food premises.
How the job runs here
The process mirrors our main cockroach removal service. On the first visit we look before we treat: a torch goes into the sink unit, along the kickboards, behind the cooker and fridge and into any boxed-in pipework, and we leave a handful of sticky insect monitors that show how widespread the problem is. Gel bait goes into cracks and hinges in very small amounts, with an insect growth regulator added where it helps and a residual spray or dust kept for deep voids that nobody can reach.
We’re back two to three weeks later, and again after that, to read the monitors, replace any bait that has been eaten and deal with the nymphs emerging from egg cases the first treatment couldn’t reach. Expect around three visits spread across six to eight weeks, while an oriental cockroach problem in a cool terrace or one shared across a block can take longer. We seal small gaps around pipes as we go and flag anything bigger for you or your landlord.
Keeping them out after we’ve gone
A few local habits make a real difference. Check second-hand fridges, microwaves and furniture before they come indoors, especially when a new tenancy begins, and flatten cardboard boxes for recycling rather than storing them. Keep food sealed, fix dripping taps and lift pet bowls at bedtime. Lidded bins, emptied often, matter in a terrace with a back alley, and so does reporting a smelly or slow drain early, because it may be cracked or blocked.
What we tend to find in Rusholme & Moss Side
- Much of western Moss Side was rebuilt with council houses and flats in the 1960s and 70s, and in blocks like these German cockroaches move between homes along the shared pipe runs and service ducts.
- Rusholme's terraces, built between 1880 and 1930, often have old drain runs and voids under the ground floor, the cool, damp spaces where oriental cockroaches live.
- The Curry Mile has at least 70 restaurants, takeaways and kebab houses, and homes that share walls, drains or bin areas with food businesses can pick up cockroaches from them however clean they are.
- A 2017 review of hygiene ratings found a quarter of Curry Mile businesses needed major improvement, and a café just off the strip was shut after mice and cockroaches were found.
- Students rent many of Rusholme's terraces, so the second-hand fridges, microwaves and cardboard boxes that arrive with each new tenancy are a regular way for German cockroaches to get in.
What happens when you call us
- 1
Tell us what you've seen
Ring or message us with what you've spotted and where. A photo of one cockroach, even a squashed one, usually tells us which kind it is and how to plan the visit.
- 2
A proper look round
With a torch we check under the sink, behind kickboards and appliances, in the boiler cupboard and along pipe boxing, and set small insect monitors to see how far it has spread.
- 3
Targeted treatment
Tiny dots of professional gel bait go into cracks, hinges and gaps where cockroaches shelter. Where it's needed, we add a growth regulator, or a spray or dust in voids nobody can reach.
- 4
Plain advice for you
We show you where everything is, what to leave alone and what helps: no shop sprays, food sealed away, drips fixed and the gel spots left where they are.
- 5
Follow-up visits
We come back two to three weeks later to check the monitors, top up bait that has been eaten and catch the young cockroaches hatching from egg cases.
- 6
Proofing and sign-off
We seal the small gaps we find around pipes and units, flag bigger repairs for you or your landlord, and sign off once the monitors stay clear.
Cockroach Removal in Rusholme & Moss Side: your questions
I live above a shop near the Curry Mile and keep seeing cockroaches. Will you treat the business too?
Many councils run a pest control service for residents, but what is covered, who can book and the charges all vary and can change, so check the council's own pest control pages before you book. If you rent from a council or housing association, report the problem to your landlord first. If you would rather book a private firm, call or message us and we'll offer the earliest slot we have.
We keep finding big black cockroaches in the bath of our old Moss Side terrace. Where are they coming from?
Almost certainly from below. Those sound like oriental cockroaches, which live in drains and cellars and in the cool spaces beneath the floorboards, and once they fall into a bath they can't climb its smooth sides. In a terrace around a century old, the usual ways in are a cracked drain connection, a gap around a waste pipe or a broken airbrick. We'll treat the voids and drain runs and tell you which repairs matter most. For tenants, fixing them is normally down to the landlord.
We've just moved into a Rusholme student house and the kitchen has cockroaches. Who pays?
If the cockroaches were already living there before your tenancy began, sorting them out most likely falls to the landlord, because a rented home should be fit to live in from day one. Photograph what you've seen, note the date and message your landlord or agent straight away so there's a written record. Hold off bringing in more cardboard or second-hand appliances until it's dealt with. Landlords and agents can book us directly; we'll arrange access with the household and leave a written report after each visit.
Is cockroach gel safe with a crawling baby in our Moss Side flat?
Yes, when it's placed properly, and placement is the whole point. The gel goes in tiny spots tucked inside cupboard hinges, behind kickboards and at the back of appliances, never on floors or worktops a baby can reach. We'll show you each spot so you know where they are. If a deep void needs a spray, we'll say which room the baby should stay out of, and until when. Clearing cockroaches helps little ones too, because their droppings and cast skins can trigger asthma.
Does having cockroaches mean my home is dirty?
No, and please don't let embarrassment stop you ringing. Cockroaches need warmth, water and somewhere to hide, and a spotless kitchen in a block of flats can still get them from a neighbour's flat or a shared riser. They also arrive in second-hand appliances, furniture and cardboard boxes. Crumbs and grease make an infestation easier to sustain, so we'll give you some kitchen advice, but we're not there to judge. Plenty of perfectly clean homes get them.
How do I tell German cockroaches from oriental cockroaches?
Size and colour are the quickest clues. German cockroaches are small, around 11 to 16 mm, light brown with two dark stripes just behind the head, and they can run up glass and glazed tiles. Oriental cockroaches are bigger, roughly 20 to 25 mm, shiny dark brown to black, slower, and they cannot climb smooth surfaces, so you often find them stuck in a bath or sink. German ones live around kitchen appliances and pipework; oriental ones prefer drains, cellars and ground-floor voids.
Are the cockroaches in my flat coming from next door?
Quite possibly. Flats share heating pipes, waste stacks, service risers and ceiling voids, and cockroaches travel along them without ever using a door. If you're seeing them mostly around pipework, a neighbour's flat or a communal bin store may be the source. Treating your flat still helps, but if the problem is building-wide it will keep coming back until the neighbouring flats and communal areas are treated too, so it's worth telling your landlord or managing agent early.
