Manchester Pest Solutions deals with bed bugs in Rusholme's shared terraces, Victoria Park flats and Moss Side family homes. We inspect every bedroom, treat the seams and joints where they hide, then return after two to three weeks for any that hatch. Call or message us and we'll offer the earliest slot we have, often the same day.

What makes Rusholme such easy travelling for bed bugs?

Bed bugs travel with people, and Rusholme is a neighbourhood where people move around a lot. Roughly a third of the ward is aged 20 to 29, the stage of life when people change address most, and students here rent whole terraces between them as well as rooms in the several halls nearby. Every change of tenancy brings in bags, bedding, frames and sofas that have spent time somewhere else, and any one of them can hide a few bugs and a cluster of eggs.

The houses help once the bugs are inside. Most of Rusholme’s terraces were built between 1880 and 1930, and the best part of a century of redecorating leaves loose wallpaper, gaps behind skirting boards and cracks between floorboards. Those are perfect daytime hiding spots for an insect that can flatten itself into the thinnest crack, and they’re why a quick spray of the mattress rarely finishes the job in a house of this age.

Halls, villas and lets around Victoria Park

On Rusholme’s eastern side, Victoria Park began as a gated estate of villas and now mixes university residences such as St Anselm Hall and Opal Gardens Hall with rented flats and private homes. If you’re living in a hall, the university’s own accommodation team is the right first contact, because it manages those buildings and will want to check neighbouring rooms.

The rented flats and private homes around the halls are a different matter, and there we can help directly. Where a large old house has been split into flats, they tend to share floor voids, pipe runs and wall cavities, so when we find bed bugs in one flat, we’ll ask whether neighbours have mentioned bites and look closely at the walls you share.

Family homes and flats in Moss Side

Moss Side’s homes bring a different set of concerns. More than a quarter of the ward’s residents are under 18, and much of the western side was rebuilt as council houses and flats in the 1960s and 70s. So our bed bug visits here often involve cots, bunk beds and children’s mattresses, and steam and hot washing take the place of sprays on those wherever possible. Treated rooms stay off limits to children and pets until the surfaces are dry, and fish tanks get covered with their pumps switched off.

In a flat, the bugs can reach the next home through gaps around pipes, sockets and skirting. If two or three flats on a landing are affected, treating them together gives the best chance of a clean finish.

How a treatment runs here

We follow the same process as our main bed bug removal service. First comes the inspection: mattress seams, bed frames, headboards, skirting boards, sofas and the rooms on either side. In a shared terrace that normally means every bedroom, because some housemates hardly react to bites and may not realise they’ve been bitten.

You’ll then get a short prep list covering hot-washing bedding and nearby clothes, bagging them clean and clearing the floor under the bed. A shared house needs everyone doing their prep together rather than one room this week and another next. The first treatment goes into seams, joints and cracks, with steam on mattresses and upholstery. Two to three weeks on, we return for the nymphs that have emerged from eggs since, and a heavy or spreading infestation may call for one more look. Everyone should stay in their usual bed throughout, however tempting the sofa seems.

Landlords and letting agents can book a whole house in one go, and we put what we found and did in writing after every visit, so tenants and owners are working from the same facts.

Stopping them moving from house to house

Some of Rusholme’s bed bug traffic starts outside. The back alleys behind the terraces have a long record of dumped rubbish and furniture, bad enough that residents have turned some into gardens to keep fly-tippers out. Whatever ends up leaning against an alley wall at the end of the academic year, whether it’s a bed base or a sofa, has a history you can’t see, so leave it where it is and report it.

On moving day, check the mattress seams and the headboard while the room is still empty, and take photos of anything odd for the inventory. When you move out, sort any problem first so you don’t pack it up for the next address. Bites clustered around the ankles in a carpeted older terrace may point to fleas or carpet beetle larvae instead, and we treat those as well.

What we tend to find in Rusholme & Moss Side

  • Of Rusholme ward's estimated 18,566 residents in 2024, 6,321 were in their twenties, an age group that moves house often and carries luggage, bedding and furniture along with it.
  • Students rent whole terraces here as well as rooms in several halls, so a single infested bed can quickly become a problem for an entire shared household.
  • Victoria Park mixes university residences with rented flats and private homes, which puts each autumn's new arrivals right next door to long-term residents.
  • More than a quarter of Moss Side ward's residents are under 18, so we often plan bed bug work around cots, bunk beds and children's mattresses.
  • The back alleys behind the terraces have a history of fly-tipping, and beds and sofas left out there can carry bugs to whoever drags them indoors.

What happens when you call us

  1. 1

    Tell us what you've found

Call or message us with what you've seen. A photo of spots on the mattress, or a bug stuck to clear tape, really helps, and we'll ask who sleeps where, including babies and pets.

  2. 2

    A proper inspection

We check the mattress seams, bed frame, headboard, skirting, sofa and the rooms either side, so we know whether it's one bedroom or the whole house or flat.

  3. 3

    Getting the room ready

You'll get a short prep list: hot-wash the bedding and clothes, bag them up clean, clear under the bed and keep belongings in the room rather than moving them elsewhere.

  4. 4

    First treatment

Treatment goes into the seams, joints and crevices where bed bugs hide, with steam on mattresses and soft furnishings where a spray isn't right. You'll know which rooms to keep out of and for how long.

  5. 5

    Second treatment

We come back about two to three weeks later to deal with the young bugs that hatched from eggs the first visit couldn't reach.

  6. 6

    Final check and advice

If the problem was heavy or had spread, a final check shows whether anything's left. We leave a written note of what we found and did, plus tips to stop bed bugs coming home again.

Bed Bug Removal in Rusholme & Moss Side: your questions

I'm in a university hall in Victoria Park and think I've got bed bugs. Should I call you?

Tell your hall or accommodation office first. University residences have their own maintenance and pest arrangements, and they'll want to check the rooms around yours as well. Meanwhile, keep sleeping in your own room, wash your bedding on a hot cycle and avoid carrying bags or clothes into friends' rooms. If you've since moved into a private flat or house nearby and the bites have followed you, that's when we can help directly, and we can put what we find in writing for your landlord.

Our Moss Side flat shares walls with two neighbours. Will treating ours be enough?

Sometimes, but not always. Bed bugs can creep through gaps around pipes, sockets and skirting into the next flat, so if a neighbour has them too, your home can be reinfested once we've finished. We check the shared walls closely and ask whether anyone next door has mentioned bites. If more than one home looks affected, let your landlord or managing agent know: treating the neighbouring flats around the same time is far more likely to work than doing them one after another.

I'm a council tenant in Moss Side. Can I get bed bugs treated for free?

Many councils run a pest control service for residents, but what is covered, who can book and the charges all vary and can change, so check the council's own pest control pages before you book. If you rent from a council or housing association, report the problem to your landlord first. If you would rather book a private firm, call or message us and we'll offer the earliest slot we have.

We're leaving our Rusholme house in June. How do we avoid taking bed bugs with us?

Deal with them before you move, not after. Moving day spreads bed bugs better than almost anything, because frames get taken apart and bedding goes into boxes. Book treatment early enough for the second visit to happen before you leave, then hot-wash and tumble dry everything that can take it and seal it in clean bags. Check bed frame joints and suitcase linings before they go in the van, and please don't leave old mattresses in the back alley for someone else to pick up.

Should I sleep in a different room if I have bed bugs?

No, keep sleeping in your own bed if you can. Bed bugs find people by the warmth and carbon dioxide we give off, so if you move to the sofa or a housemate's room they tend to follow, and you end up with two infested rooms instead of one. Staying put also means the bugs have to cross the surfaces we've treated to reach you, which is a big part of how the treatment works. Wash your bedding hot, pull the bed a little away from the wall and keep the duvet off the floor.

Is it possible to get rid of bed bugs overnight?

Not usually, and we'd rather be straight with you about that. Treatment kills the bugs it reaches, but eggs tucked into crevices often survive and hatch over the following week or so, which is why we plan two visits about two to three weeks apart. Whole-room heat treatment can kill every stage in a single day in some homes, but it still needs a check afterwards. Realistically, expect it to take a few weeks, and doing the prep and aftercare makes a real difference.

What kills 100% of bed bugs?

No one method is certain to get every bug, but heat is the most reliable thing. A 60°C wash followed by at least 30 minutes in a hot tumble dryer kills every stage in bedding and clothes, and steam kills the bugs and eggs it touches on a mattress or sofa. The hard part is reaching every bug, because they squeeze into joints, seams and gaps about as thin as a bank card. No single spray does it all, partly because many bed bugs now cope with common insecticides. That's why we combine methods and come back to catch anything that hatched in between.
