Itchy ankles, a scratching cat or fleas waiting in a new rental? We find where they're breeding, treat the affected floors and explain the aftercare.

Manchester Pest Solutions clears fleas from Chorlton homes across M21, from converted flats with shared stairs to Chorltonville semis and the Merseybank and Nell Lane estates. We locate the breeding spots, treat the floors and leave the pets to your vet. Book by phone or message, and we'll offer the earliest slot we have, often the same day.

Why do fleas turn up in Chorlton homes?

Most cases start with a cat or dog. The cat flea is the species we find on both, and while the adults stay on the animal, their eggs scatter wherever it sleeps. The larvae grow up out of sight in carpet pile, sofa seams and the dust along the skirting, so by the time you’re being bitten, most of the problem is in the floor rather than on the pet.

What do we find in Chorlton’s converted flats?

Where a house has been divided up, the stair and landing carpet is usually the weak point. A cat let into the common parts drops eggs into a carpet nobody in particular looks after, and from there the young fleas can reach every flat. We’ll ask whether other tenants are being bitten and suggest the landlord or managing agent has the communal areas treated on the same visit.

Changeovers between tenants are the other pattern. Cocoons left by a previous tenant’s pet can wait in an empty flat until warmth and footsteps return. If the bites began soon after you moved in, tell us when you call, because it helps settle who should pay.

Does living near the Mersey make a difference?

Less than people expect. Fleas don’t breed out in the open along the river at Chorlton’s southern edge, or across green spaces such as Chorlton Ees and the Water Park. What open land does bring is wildlife: gardens beside fields and nature reserves, like those where Chorltonville meets Hardy Farm, tend to get more night-time visits from foxes, hedgehogs and roaming cats.

Flea larvae dry out and die in open, sunny grass, so a dog walk on Chorlton Ees or along the Fallowfield Loop carries less risk than a shaded corner closer to home. The spots that matter are under a shed, beneath decking or in a porch corner where an animal has been lying up.

Is flea treatment safe with children and pets at home?

Yes, provided nobody goes back in before the floors have dried. When you call, we’ll ask who’s in the household, from babies and anyone pregnant to fish, caged birds and reptiles, and whether you share stairs with other flats. Then we’ll offer the earliest slot we have, often the same day.

On the day, we inspect pet beds, sofas, stairs and any communal landing, plus the loft and eaves in a pet-free home. The spray combines an insecticide for adult fleas with a growth regulator that stops the young ones maturing. People and pets stay away until every treated floor has dried, fish tanks are kept covered with the pump switched off, and the animals themselves are treated by your vet, not by us. Should fleas still be hatching a fortnight or so later, we return. Small shops and cafés around the Barlow Moor Road and Wilbraham Road crossroads get the same care, timed around opening hours.

Renting in Chorlton: who sorts it, and can the council help?

Many councils run a pest control service for residents, but what is covered, who can book and the charges all vary and can change, so check the council’s own pest control pages before you book. If you rent from a council or housing association, report the problem to your landlord first. If you would rather book a private firm, call or message us and we’ll offer the earliest slot we have.

How do you keep fleas out of a Chorlton home?

Treat each cat and dog with a vet-recommended flea product all year, not just in summer, wash pet bedding hot and vacuum the stairs as well as the rooms. If a neighbour’s cat has been lying up under your shed or decking, block the gap. Where birds have nested in the loft, let the young fly first, then clear the nest and seal the hole; our pigeon and bird proofing and squirrel removal services cover that. Bitten in bed with no pets? Our bed bug and carpet beetle pages explain the other usual suspects.

What we tend to find in Chorlton

  • Over the 20th century, a number of Chorlton's bigger houses became flats and bedsits. Where several flats share one stair carpet, fleas can reach every front door, so the communal parts usually need treating with the flats.
  • Chorltonville's semi-detached pairs sit among roads, verges and trees that the estate's volunteer owners' committee maintains. In a house there with no cat or dog, a disused bird's nest in the roof space or under the eaves is one of the first things we rule out.
  • Chorltonville borders the fields of Hardy Farm, and Chorlton Ees lies on the Mersey floodplain to the south. Where gardens meet open green space, we check the shaded, sheltered spots under sheds and decking where cats, foxes and hedgehogs lie up.

What happens when you call us

  1. 1

    Tell us what you're seeing

Call or message us about the bites, the fleas or the scratching pet. We'll ask who lives with you, including any fish, birds or reptiles, and offer the earliest slot we have, often the same day.

  2. 2

    Get the house ready

We'll send you simple preparation steps: vacuum everywhere, clear the floors, hot-wash bedding and pet beds, get your pets treated through your vet and cover any fish tank.

  3. 3

Confirm it's fleas and find the source

We check pet beds, sofas, carpets, stairs and skirting edges. If there are no pets, we look in the loft and eaves for an old nest, and we rule out bed bugs and carpet beetle larvae.

  4. 4

    Treat floors and furnishings

A professional spray that pairs an insecticide with an insect growth regulator goes over carpets, rugs, gappy floorboards and under furniture, so adult fleas die and eggs and larvae can't grow into biters.

  5. 5

Stay out, then follow the aftercare

Everyone, pets included, stays out until treated areas are dry. Before we leave, we'll give you a time to come back and tell you how long to wait before vacuuming.

  6. 6

    Check back

If fleas are still hatching about two weeks later, we come back to check the house, look again for a source we might not have seen, and re-treat where it's needed.

Flea Removal in Chorlton: your questions

My flat is in a converted Chorlton house and the bites are worst on the shared stairs. Whose job is that?

Communal hallways, stairs and landings are normally the landlord's or managing agent's responsibility, so report it to them in writing with dated photos. Treating your own flat won't hold for long if the stair carpet keeps sending fresh fleas under your door. The best result comes from treating every affected flat and the common parts on the same visit, and we can share what we find with your landlord or agent to help arrange that.

Will the council treat fleas free on the Merseybank or Nell Lane estates?

Many councils run a pest control service for residents, but what is covered, who can book and the charges all vary and can change, so check the council's own pest control pages before you book. If you rent from a council or housing association, report the problem to your landlord first. If you would rather book a private firm, call or message us and we'll offer the earliest slot we have.

We're in Chorltonville and the fleas came from a bird's nest in the roof. Can we block the gap afterwards?

Council services and charges change, so check the council's own website for the current position, and if you rent, ask your landlord first.

Why am I getting flea bites when we don't have a pet?

Usually because an animal used to live there, or something is getting in. Flea cocoons left behind by a previous owner's cat or dog can sit quietly in the carpet for months, then hatch all at once when new people move in and start walking about. Birds nesting under the eaves or in the loft, and squirrels in the roof, are the other common sources, especially in late spring and summer. A neighbour's cat that wanders in, or a second-hand rug, can do it too. If you're only bitten in bed at night, we'll check for bed bugs as well.

We've just moved into a rented flat and it has fleas. Who pays?

If the fleas were there before you moved in, it's reasonable to expect your landlord to sort it, because a rented home in England should be fit to live in from the first day of the tenancy. Report it in writing straight away, with dated photos of the bites or the fleas, so there's no question later of them being blamed on a pet of yours. If you've brought a pet with you and it has fleas, treatment is normally down to you. Either way, we're happy to send our findings to your landlord or letting agent.

Is flea treatment safe with a baby, cats, dogs or fish at home?

Yes, as long as the drying time is respected. We ask who lives with you before we start, and everyone, pets included, stays out of treated rooms until they're completely dry. A baby who's crawling should only go back on the floor once it's dry and the room has aired. Fish need extra care, because these insecticides are very harmful to them, so tanks must be covered and the pump switched off. Caged birds and reptiles should be moved out of the rooms we're treating.
