Manchester Pest Solutions treats homes across North Manchester's M9 and M40 districts, including Higher Blackley, New Moston and the Harpurhey estates. We deal with rats, mice, fleas, bed bugs, wasps and squirrels, plan each visit around children and pets, and seal the gaps they used. Call or message us to book and we'll offer the earliest slot we have.
Farmland semis, Broadway estates and Harpurhey’s own names
Houses from these decades bring their own pest routes. Plenty were built with a void under the ground floor, ventilated by airbricks, and every new boiler, cable or kitchen since has left another small hole that nobody remembers drilling. A mouse needs a gap roughly the width of a pencil. Once inside a cavity or floor void it can travel a long way, which is why mice in one half of a semi often turn up next door. Our mice control page explains how we trace and seal those routes.
Who owns, who rents, and why it shapes the call
The 2021 census counted 28,784 households, and just under 72,000 people, across the Charlestown, Harpurhey, Higher Blackley and Moston wards. About 36% rent from a social landlord, 22% rent privately and 42% own their home outright or with a mortgage. Those averages hide big swings. In Moston more than half of households own. In Harpurhey fewer than three in ten do, a similar share rent privately, and over four in ten rent from a social landlord.
Homes beside the Irk, Moston Brook and the cloughs
Water runs right through this patch. The River Irk crosses Blackley and marks Harpurhey’s western edge, and it has a long reputation for destructive floods. Moston Brook forms the border with Failsworth before disappearing into culverts for almost all of its remaining run to the Irk. Local children once called it the Black Brook because its water changed colour with the dyes and pigments poured into it, and from around 1949 the old pits along its valley were filled with waste, the last one closing in the 1990s.
The green spaces are just as big. Boggart Hole Clough covers about 190 acres of ancient wooded cloughs with a fishing pond, and it has been a Local Nature Reserve since 2008. Heaton Park in Higher Blackley runs to more than 600 acres, boating lake included, while Broadhurst Clough in Moston has open water of its own.
For householders, that adds up to brown rats living along banks and culverts, mice drifting from long grass into warm houses as the nights draw in, and grey squirrels in mature trees eyeing up a dry loft. If your garden backs onto any of this, keep compost enclosed, stand bird feeders over a tray, trim branches that touch the roof and walk the fence line each October.
Keeping children and pets safe during treatment
Indoors we use covered traps wherever they’ll do the job, and any bait goes into locked, tamper-resistant boxes fixed in place behind kickboards, under floors or in the loft, never left loose. In gardens where pets have the run of the place, we keep outdoor boxes to a minimum and lean harder on proofing. Our flea removal and bed bug removal treatments mean keeping people and animals out of treated rooms until surfaces are dry, and we’ll tell you how long before we begin. Fleas deserve a special word in a rented area: when a home changes tenants, eggs left by the last occupant’s cat or dog can hatch weeks later, so treat your own pets with a vet-recommended product at the same time.
Can I get the council to deal with it?
Many councils run a pest control service for residents, but what is covered, who can book and the charges all vary and can change, so check the council’s own pest control pages before you book. If you rent from a council or housing association, report the problem to your landlord first. If you would rather book a private firm, call or message us and we’ll offer the earliest slot we have.
Rochdale Road shops, and getting to you
Homes come first for us up here, but shops on both sides of Rochdale Road and traders at the North City Shopping Centre and Market get the same friendly service, with treatment planned around opening hours. We reach North Manchester along Rochdale Road, Moston Lane and the Cheetham Hill Road route, and we also look after homes in Prestwich and the city centre. Get in touch and we’ll offer the earliest slot we have, often the same day.
Common pests in North Manchester (Blackley, Moston & Harpurhey) homes
Rats
Rats follow food waste, drains and overgrown cover, so our visits start with bins, drain covers and gaps around pipes before any baiting.
Mice
Houses put up on Blackley's farmland from the 1930s to the 1960s, and the interwar streets off Broadway in New Moston, often hide floor voids and decades of pipe holes that let mice move indoors as the weather turns.
Fleas
Nearly three in ten Harpurhey households rent privately, so many people move into homes where a previous tenant's cat or dog left flea eggs in the carpet, which can hatch weeks after the new keys are handed over.
Bed Bugs
Bed bugs arrive in luggage, bedding and second-hand furniture, so homes that change hands often are at risk; we treat the bed, furniture and shared walls, then return to check.
Wasps & Hornets
Gaps under eaves and roof tiles on homes that have stood since the 1930s are where queen wasps start nests in spring, and gardens near Heaton Park, Boggart Hole Clough and Broadhurst Park give workers plenty to forage.
Squirrels
Mature woodland at Boggart Hole Clough, Blackley Forest and Heaton Park suits grey squirrels, and houses backing onto it can find them getting into lofts through loose fascias, soffits and roof gaps.

Can I get Manchester City to deal with it?
Many councils offer a pest control service for residents, but which pests are covered, who can book and what it costs all vary and can change. Check the council's own pest control pages for current details before you book, and if you rent, ask your landlord who is responsible for treatment.

Why North Manchester (Blackley, Moston & Harpurhey) gets the pests it does
- Most of Blackley's farmland was built over in a slow spread of housing between the 1930s and the 1960s, and its homes are mainly privately owned, either lived in by their owners or let to tenants. [Wikipedia]
- Building Broadway from 1925 opened up new estates around West Avenue and Chatwood Road in New Moston; the council built houses around Chatwood Road from 1928 on land bought from the LMS Railway, and house building on The Fairway began in 1973/4 after the golf course was sold. [Wikipedia]
- Harpurhey takes in several named housing areas, among them the Kingsbridge, Shiredale and Baywood estates and Barnes Green. [Wikipedia]
- At the 2021 census the Charlestown, Harpurhey, Higher Blackley and Moston wards held 28,784 households: about 36% rented from a social landlord, 22% rented privately and 42% owned, with Moston the highest for ownership at 54% and Harpurhey the highest for private renting at 29%. [Office for National Statistics (Nomis)]
- Between April and December 2016 Higher Blackley logged more rodent requests to the council than any of Manchester's 32 wards, 74 of 896, and in over 30% of them residents had found rats indoors; the council said the figures covered only its own service. [Mancunian Matters]
- Moston Brook runs about 3.7 miles south-west to the River Irk, forming the boundary with Failsworth before being culverted for almost all of the rest of its course; old pits in its valley were used as landfill from around 1949 until the 1990s. [Wikipedia]
- Boggart Hole Clough in Blackley covers about 76 hectares of ancient wooded cloughs where Boggart Hole Brook rises, and it was made a Local Nature Reserve in 2008. [Wikipedia]
- The River Irk flows through Blackley and along Harpurhey's western edge, has a history of destructive flooding, and is fed by both Moston Brook and Boggart Hole Brook. [Wikipedia]
Pest control in North Manchester (Blackley, Moston & Harpurhey): your questions
Do you cover all of North Manchester, including Charlestown, New Moston and the Harpurhey estates?
Yes. We cover the M9 and M40 homes on this side of the city, which takes in Higher Blackley and the Charlestown ward, Moston and New Moston out to Moston Brook, and Harpurhey on both sides of Rochdale Road, Kingsbridge, Shiredale and Baywood included. Streets near the Middleton Road entrances to Heaton Park and the roads off Broadway, Lightbowne Road and Victoria Avenue are all part of our patch. Not sure about your road? Just ask when you get in touch.
What does Manchester City Council offer North Manchester residents for pests?
Many councils run a pest control service for residents, but what is covered, who can book and the charges all vary and can change, so check the council's own pest control pages before you book. If you rent from a council or housing association, report the problem to your landlord first. If you would rather book a private firm, call or message us and we'll offer the earliest slot we have.
I rent from a housing association, not the council. Will my treatment be free?
Council services and charges change, so check the council's own website for the current position, and if you rent, ask your landlord first.
Higher Blackley was once called Manchester's rat capital. Should I be worried?
The council's own pages are the place to confirm what it currently covers and charges; if you would rather use a private firm, get in touch and we will arrange a visit.
Our garden backs onto Boggart Hole Clough. Are we more likely to get rats or squirrels?
Living next to a large stretch of old woodland, brook and pond does bring wildlife closer to your back fence. Rats like water and thick cover, and grey squirrels nest in mature trees before looking for a dry loft. That doesn't mean trouble is coming, but it pays to keep compost bins closed, stand bird feeders over a tray, cut back branches touching the roof and check fences and airbricks each autumn. If you spot burrows by the boundary or hear scratching overhead at dawn, call us early.
I rent privately in Harpurhey. Is pest control my landlord's job?
The council's own pages are the place to confirm what it currently covers and charges; if you would rather use a private firm, get in touch and we will arrange a visit.
Is treatment safe in a Blackley semi with a toddler and a dog?
Yes, with some planning. Indoors we lean on covered traps, and any bait goes into locked, tamper-resistant boxes that a child or dog can't open, fixed behind kickboards, under the floor or in the loft. In the garden we keep boxes to a minimum and put more effort into proofing. For flea or bed bug sprays, we'll tell you how long to keep children and pets out of the treated rooms before we start. We show you every box and collect them all when the job is finished.
Do you help shops and stalls around the North City market?
Yes, though homes are most of our work up here. Shops along Rochdale Road and traders around the North City Shopping Centre and Market get the same friendly service: a proper survey, treatment planned around opening hours and written notes you can keep for an environmental health officer. If you live above a shop and the mice seem to be coming from below, tell us, because it usually makes sense to treat both at once.
